Religious leaders in the country are on red alert to foil any attempt by political parties to use vigilante groups in the 2020 general elections.

The move is to ensure Ghanaians exercise their franchise during the elections without fear or intimidation.

Former General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem programme Friday said, they will embark on a massive demonstration if the two leading political parties New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) do not disband their vigilante groups.

He bemoaned how these two political parties act like angles when in opposition but behave abnormally when in power.

The former Christian Council chief scribe said the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has given political parties a three-month ultimatum to disband all vigilante groups else it will embark on a nationwide protest.

“We will demonstrate in our cassocks because when there is violence, the people will run to the church so we owe it to our members to protect them. Democracy must function in freedom minus intimidation” he added.

Rev. Opuni-Frimpong urged Ghanaians to reject any political party that fails to ban vigilante groups.
