The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has called on Ghanaians to join the Ghana Police Service in the fight against vigilantism.

He made the call while testifying before the Justice Emile Short Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

The Justice Short Commission is probing the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency by-election shooting incident which occurred on January 31, 2019.

According to him, “vigilantism is a threat to our democracy.”

He urged that “so all of us must take a decision. Because what we are seeing now if it should metamorphose into another stage it will be difficult for us to revise.”

The IGP explained Ghanaians must take a bold decision to vote against political parties that do not want to disband their vigilante groupings.

He said political parties claim they do not sponsor vigilante groups but that individuals within them do.

He appealed to civil society groups and churches to be part of the fight against vigilantism, saying that the Police Service has started printing banners against vigilantism and that the Ghana Pentecostal Council has come forward to support the police in that regard.
